Alexander W. Judd
Making Every Word Count
Alexander Judd has spent his entire career as a lawyer expanding his knowledge of legal issues that impact the energy industry.
Alex was first attracted to the topic of renewable energy and the intricacies of energy policy while studying political science at The George Washington University. He decided on a career in energy law because he enjoyed thinking strategically and working with complex scenarios. After graduating from law school, his first job was working for the Connecticut Legislature, drafting bills for the Energy and Technology Committee of the Connecticut General Assembly. In that role, Alex learned how important a single word or phrase could be.
"I worked with the legislative leadership to draft every bill that came through the committee, and from that experience, I gained a real appreciation that each and every word really matters and is there for a reason," Alex said. "It was very good preparation for the work I do now evaluating statutes and regulations for clients."
As a partner in Day Pitney's Energy and Utilities practice, much of Alex's work centers around the importance of each word in state regulations. Alex represents clients in proceedings before public utility commissions. He also represents third-party competitive energy suppliers and other clients before state agencies to make sure they are in compliance with state orders, decisions, statutes and regulations.
The depth and scope of Day Pitney's services to energy and utilities clients have allowed him to expand his practice to other areas, including project finance work, and have led to involvement in more sophisticated national matters. Alex provides guidance to companies and developers in transactions related to the financing of energy projects, many of which involve renewable energy. For instance, he was part of a team that represented a large private infrastructure fund in its $1.25 billion acquisition of an interest in a wind, solar and battery storage portfolio in 2019.
Alex believes that a key component to being successful in his practice is having a constant awareness of the right questions to ask, and thinking ahead to be responsive to clients on a moment's notice.
Clients appreciate Alex's responsiveness to their concerns, his ability to communicate the impacts of particular regulatory actions in an easy-to-understand manner, and his thorough legal knowledge in providing guidance on next steps.
Recently, when a state regulatory agency approved several changes that impacted the business of energy suppliers, Alex met with clients at Vistra Corp. to communicate those changes. David Ricketts, Director of Retail Policy at Vistra, said Alex has a unique ability to convey complex information to different audiences.
"His in-depth experience helps him provide clients with an understanding of why they should or should not be focused on a particular proceeding," David said. "He also understands how past decisions or rulings may impact an agency's thought process on a current matter."
When he is not assisting clients, Alex keeps up with industry updates by being active in energy law organizations. He is the newly elected President of the Connecticut Power and Energy Society and immediate past Chair of the Energy Section of the Connecticut Bar Association.
