Day Pitney LLP is pleased to announce that Dr. Richard B. Emmons, Partner and Co-Chair of the firm’s Patent Prosecution and Counseling Practice, has been named to the 2026 Lawdragon 500 Leading Global IP Lawyers list. This recognition highlights his standing among the leading intellectual property practitioners recognized for shaping and protecting innovation in a rapidly evolving global marketplace.

The Lawdragon 500 Leading Global IP Lawyers guide recognizes attorneys protecting innovation, defending brand integrity and leveraging assets at the heart of their clients’ businesses. Dr. Emmons advises life sciences, med-tech, and deep-tech innovators—and the investors who back them—on global patent strategy, portfolio development, and IP-driven enterprise value. His clients range from scientific founders and emerging companies through Fortune 500 enterprises, family offices, and institutional investors, and his counsel spans the full product lifecycle, from earliest-stage research through commercialization and exit.

Dr. Emmons brings a distinctive combination of scientific and legal experience to his practice. He holds a Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from Washington University School of Medicine and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. His technical fluency spans genetics, immunology, molecular and cell biology, bioinformatics, and translational medicine, extending into AI-enabled platforms, connected devices, and clean technologies.

Dr. Emmons is also a trusted advisor on the IP issues that drive transactions. He regularly leads investor-side and company-side diligence in venture financings, strategic partnerships, and M&A, where his ability to evaluate scientific validity, regulatory exposure, and competitive positioning shapes pricing, deal structure, and post-close strategy. He counsels clients on freedom-to-operate, patentability, and enforcement, and represents clients in post-grant and contested proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including inter partes review (IPR) and post-grant review (PGR), always with an eye toward broader commercial objectives.

Dr. Emmons earned his J.D. from Suffolk Law School and his B.A. from College of the Atlantic. He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and the USPTO.
