"Planning for and Addressing Changed Circumstances," New York State Bar Association's Trust and Estates Law Section

New York Partner Michael S. Schwartz will be speaking at the Annual Meeting of the New York State Bar Association during the Trusts and Estates Law Section on January 17, and will be given an honor for his work as chair of the section in 2023.

As section chair, Schwartz will offer the welcoming address to the conference. The conference is titled, "Planning for and Addressing Changed Circumstances." It will provide a toolbox for estate planners, fiduciaries, and litigators so that they can get ahead of this rising tide before it manifests, and address changed circumstances once they have occurred.

The conference will provide strategies for building a flexible estate plan on account of various potential uncertainties. Circumstances concerning beneficiaries may change dramatically overnight, the current federal estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax exclusion amounts are scheduled to sunset after December 31, 2025, and the Corporate Transparency Act portends to impose significant new obligations for reporting with respect to closely held entities, beneficial owners and company applicants. In addition, the conference will address the transformational changes in technology (including new far-reaching applications for artificial intelligence) that will no doubt significantly affect estate planning.
