New rules expand Connecticut's data privacy law and test small-business readiness

Day Pitney Partner and co-chair of the Data Privacy, Protection and Litigation practice, William Roberts, was recently featured in the Hartford Business Journal article titled, “New rules expand Connecticut’s data privacy law and test small-business readiness.”

In the piece, Roberts explains that upcoming amendments to Connecticut’s Data Privacy Act—taking effect in 2026—will broaden compliance requirements and lower the thresholds for covered entities, bringing more small and midsize businesses under the law’s scope. While larger corporations are generally equipped to adapt, he notes that smaller companies may struggle to keep pace with evolving standards and expanding definitions of sensitive data. Roberts stresses the need for clear, current privacy notices amid changing laws and technology.

“Where companies get hung up the most tends to be on the easiest stuff, to be honest,” Roberts said. “Having a privacy notice with links that aren’t broken. Having a privacy notice that’s readable. Having a privacy notice that’s kept up to date.”
