Connecticut's New Data Privacy Law Takes Effect July 1. What You Need to Know.
Day Pitney's Data Privacy, Protection and Litigation group co-chair William Roberts was featured in the Hartford Courant Q&A titled, "Connecticut's New Data Privacy Law Takes Effect July 1. What You Need to Know."
Roberts commented on which businesses are or are not impacted by this law, stating, "The law's focus is on businesses that handle the personal data of very large numbers of Connecticut residents. Businesses that only deal with personal data occasionally or in small amounts are exempt. Other businesses that are exempt include those already subject to other data privacy laws (such as financial institutions).
And it's important to note that the law does not apply to personal data collected by a business in its role as an employer – so the law doesn't apply to HR records and personnel files."
He added, "In addition to new obligations regarding data collection, security, and individual rights, businesses must be aware of other new obligations that require their attention, including assessments on the data they collect, nondiscrimination requirements and more."
