New High-Rises and Vanishing Roots in West Grove
Day Pitney Land Use Partner Steven J. Wernick is featured in the Miami Times article "New High-Rises and Vanishing Roots in West Grove." Day Pitney is representing the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, the oldest African American Baptist church in Miami-Dade County, in its expansion to enhance its community outreach. Wernick and Counsel Joseph Ruiz are leading the effort to navigate the complex permitting process for expansion.
"As a Coconut Grove resident for 13 years, I was approached about this project," Wernick said. "The church has limited resources, and when they came to us, it was an opportunity to make a meaningful impact."
Wernick emphasized the project's unique challenges and importance, stating, "Based on its location, we needed to file an exception application because it's an expansion of a religious facility in this part of the city of Miami. As we see Miami grow, we must remember how vital these spaces are for both the existing community and new residents."
A hearing for the project has already been held with the city of Miami's preservation board, which will be followed by another in November with the planning and zoning board.
