"IP Applications in Sports & Introduction to NIL," New England Law
On November 4, Day Pitney Intellectual Property Attorneys Brandon McCool and Adam Weisman guest lectured at New England Law's Sports Law class, taught by CJ Davis (Deputy General Counsel, Head of Sports Business and Legal Affairs, PUMA North America, Inc.). They presented on "IP Applications in Sports & Introduction to NIL." The guest lecture covered key aspects of intellectual property (IP) and name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights in the sports industry. They discussed central concepts of copyright and trademark law, as well as topics such as fair use, social media pitfalls, IP clearance, licensing, and more. They also provided a brief history of the development of NIL rights and highlighted recent changes in NIL policies and how these shifts are reshaping college athletics, creating new opportunities and challenges for athletes, schools, and sponsors alike.
